Home Renovation Dumpsters in Fayetteville, NC

Whether you are gutting a kitchen, tearing out flooring or redoing a bathroom, remodel debris piles up fast. A roll-off keeps it contained and out of the way until pickup — as long as the paperwork and the placement are right before the tear-out starts.

Why a remodel needs its own dumpster

Renovation debris is bulkier and heavier than household trash. Drywall, cabinets, flooring and fixtures do not fit in a curbside cart, and the City of Fayetteville does not collect debris generated by a contractor at all; for owners doing the work themselves, Household Construction Debris pickup is paid by the load and booked a week ahead. City Code Sec. 22-25 makes removing it the property owner's job. A box on the driveway means your crew or your family can toss debris as you go instead of letting it pile up in the garage, the yard or a spare room.

Match the size to the remodel

A single bathroom remodel usually fits in a 10 or 15 yard. A kitchen remodel and most residential renovations work well in a 20 yard. Larger remodels and full-home renovations can call for a 30 yard. If tile, a slab or a patio is coming out too, keep the heavy material separate so it does not push a mixed load past its weight limit — and clean concrete and brick cost less to dispose of on their own. The sizing guide has the full table.

Time it to the tear-out

The standard rental is 7 days, which covers the demolition and first cleanup on many projects; extensions are a small daily rate if you tell us before the pickup date, and on a bigger job we can swap a full box mid-project. Schedule delivery for the start of demolition, not the day you begin finish work, so debris never has to sit waiting for the box.

Plan around the City's loading hours. City Code Sec. 17-11 prohibits loading, unloading or handling containers and building materials between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. on weekdays and 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. on weekends and holidays, in or within 50 yards of a residential area. In Hope Mills and Spring Lake the clock matters at the other end too: both towns require building debris to be removed by the property owner within ten days of finishing the work.

Asbestos: check before you tear out

North Carolina treats a homeowner's own remodel differently from a contractor's commercial job. The NC DHHS Health Hazards Control Unit says "North Carolina homeowners can renovate without testing for asbestos. You can also renovate without a permit, even if you're disturbing or removing asbestos" — but it still recommends an asbestos inspection, single-family homes included. The federal asbestos rule that HHCU enforces covers commercial and industrial buildings and residential buildings of more than four units, and EPA does not treat a house renovated as part of a commercial or public project as exempt. On those jobs, friable regulated material over 3 square or linear feet must be removed by NC-accredited asbestos workers, and more than 160 square feet, 260 linear feet or 35 cubic feet needs an HHCU removal permit. Asbestos-containing material never goes in a standard roll-off.

Demolition: the state notice and the local permit

For buildings the federal rule covers, HHCU says to notify it "of building demolition, even if no asbestos is present." The notice must be postmarked or received at least 10 working days before work starts, and "a demolition notification is required, even if no asbestos was identified by the facility/building inspection." NC DEQ adds that demolition contractors must remove mercury-containing lights and thermostats before a building comes down, and must not put them in an unlined landfill.

Local permits are a separate step. Spring Lake lists demolition permits among its Town permits, and Eastover sends planning and inspections to Cumberland County (910-678-7600). In Fayetteville, ask the City whether your job needs a building or demolition permit; we did not research those fees here. Book the dumpster for the day after the paperwork clears.

HOA driveways and the street

We found no City of Fayetteville permit for a roll-off on your own driveway. If your home is in an HOA, though, its rules can limit how long a dumpster stays visible or where it sits, so check before delivery day — especially on a project that will keep the container on site for more than a few days.

The street is a different matter. On a city street or sidewalk you need the City's Temporary Right-of-Way Encroachment permit, valid for 30 days — the FY2025–26 fee schedule listed $75 per 30 days, so check the current fee — with a 4-foot pedestrian path or "SIDEWALK CLOSED" signs, and lights at night under City Code Sec. 24-6. On a state road, it takes a written NCDOT permit under G.S. 136-93. In Raeford the code bans obstructions in streets and sidewalks, so it is the driveway or nothing. The permit guide has every town.

What remodel debris can go in

Drywall, wood trim, cabinetry, flooring, tile, siding and fixtures are all welcome. Paint is not: oil-based paint and stains go to the Cumberland County hazardous waste center at 923 Wilkes Road, free for County homeowners, and the County says to dry out latex paint with kitty litter, sand or dirt and bin it with the household trash. Fridges, stoves, water heaters and other white goods are banned from NC landfills; take them to the Ann Street white goods area. Fluorescent tubes and old thermostats come out before demolition. TVs and computers are banned from NC landfills too. If your renovation includes materials you are unsure about, ask before the rental starts so nothing holds up pickup day. Protecting your property on delivery day

All our containers are driveway-safe, and we put protective boards or pads under the wheels on request — we recommend them on concrete or pavers. If the only spot is grass or softer ground, tell us in advance so we can plan. Give us clear access to the spot and a heads-up about low branches, wires or narrow gates; the truck needs room to back in. Call (910) 672-8396, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and ask about same-day delivery if the tear-out is already under way.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an asbestos inspection to remodel my house in North Carolina?

Not by law for a homeowner working on their own house — NC DHHS says homeowners can renovate without testing or a permit. It still recommends an inspection. Contractors on commercial buildings and larger apartment buildings face the full federal and state rules.

Does a demolition need a state notice?

For buildings the federal asbestos rule covers — commercial buildings, residential buildings of more than four units, and houses demolished as part of a commercial or public project — yes: a notice to the NC Health Hazards Control Unit at least 10 working days ahead, even if no asbestos is found.

What hours can a dumpster be loaded in Fayetteville?

City Code Sec. 17-11 prohibits loading and handling containers and building materials between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. on weekdays and 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. on weekends and holidays, in or within 50 yards of a residential area.

How long do renovation dumpster rentals last?

The standard rental is 7 days. Extensions are a small daily rate — just call or text before the pickup date — and we can swap a full box mid-project.
