What Size Dumpster Do I Need? A Fayetteville Guide

Quick answer by project type

For most home projects in Fayetteville, a 20 yard dumpster is the one to start with. It is our most popular size and handles kitchen and bathroom remodels, roofing jobs, flooring, drywall or siding replacement, multi-room and estate cleanouts, and light construction debris. Go 10 yard for small home projects, a bathroom remodel, a garage or attic cleanout, or a weekend of yard work — branches, leaves and old mulch beds. Go 15 yard for garage cleanouts, minor renovations and flooring or carpet removal. Go 30 yard for full-home renovations, new home builds, demolition and big moving or estate cleanouts, and 40 yard for commercial projects, large-scale construction and multi-unit jobs. Not sure? Call (910) 672-8396 and we size it for you.

The rule of thumb we use: if the job already fits in the back of a pickup a few times over, a 10 is usually enough; a 20 for home remodels and big cleanouts; a 30 or 40 for construction, demolition and commercial work. If you are torn between a 10 and a 20, most contractors size up rather than risk a second delivery.

The five sizes side by side

All five are open-top roll-offs about 8 feet wide. The 10 and 15 are shorter boxes; the 20, 30 and 40 share a footprint of about 22 feet and simply get taller. Pickup loads are a rough guide to volume. The weight column is the typical limit, which depends on the material.

SizeApprox. L × W × HHolds aboutTypical weight limitTypical job
10 yard12' × 8' × 3.5'3 pickup loads2–3 tonsBathroom remodel, garage cleanout, yard debris
15 yard14' × 8' × 4.5'4–5 pickup loads2–3 tonsMinor renovation, flooring, garage cleanout
20 yard22' × 8' × 4.5'6 pickup loads3–4 tonsKitchen remodel, roofing, large cleanout
30 yard22' × 8' × 6'9 pickup loads4–5 tonsFull-home renovation, new build, demolition
40 yard22' × 8' × 8'12 pickup loads5–6 tonsCommercial, large construction, multi-unit

Most people under-count the pile. Measure or estimate it before you call — even a rough idea helps — and when your estimate lands between two sizes, go up. A second haul costs more than the extra yards.

Check the weight, not just the volume

Volume and weight are two separate limits. Furniture and household junk are bulky and light; concrete, dirt, brick, tile and roofing shingles hit the weight line long before the box looks full. For heavy materials like concrete or roofing, it is best to keep them separate. If more than half the load is dense, tell us first and we will help you work out a load that stays inside the limit, so there is no overage to pay.

There is a disposal reason to keep heavy loads apart too. Cumberland County's fee schedule for the Ann Street Landfill lists clean inert debris — brick, block, dirt and rock with no rebar — at $18 a ton and clean shingles at $22 a ton, against $46 a ton for construction and demolition debris and for mixed shingles. There is a height limit as well: keep everything level with or below the top rim. An overfilled dumpster cannot be safely transported.

Measure the drop spot

Check the length first: about 12 feet for a 10 yard, about 14 for a 15, and about 22 feet for the 20, 30 and 40 — most of a two-car driveway. All are about 8 feet wide. Bigger containers need more room, so pick a clear, flat area with space for the truck to back in and nothing low overhead, such as branches or wires. We put protective boards under the wheels on request, and recommend them on concrete or pavers. Once our driver sets the container down, please do not move it; if it needs to shift, call us. The 10 yard is the easiest to fit on a tight driveway.

Keep it on private property where you can. We found no City of Fayetteville permit for a roll-off on your own driveway. A city street or sidewalk is different: that takes a City Temporary Right-of-Way Encroachment permit. Outside the city, most roads are state-maintained, and G.S. 136-93 requires a written NCDOT permit for any obstruction placed on a state road. Raeford's code bans obstructions in its streets and sidewalks outright. The permit guide covers every place we serve.

Why the trash cart will not do it

The City of Fayetteville collects a lot, but not a remodel. Crews take up to five bulky items free; six or more must be paid for and scheduled. Owners and renters can book Household Construction Debris pickup seven days ahead — the FY2025–26 fee schedule lists $50 for under 10 cubic yards, $100 for 10 to 20 and $357 per load over 20 — but for debris generated by a contractor the schedule says "Not offered." City Code Sec. 22-25 puts removal of construction and demolition debris on the property owner.

The neighbors are similar. Cumberland County's container sites are for homeowners only, up to 4 cubic yards a week, and do not take construction or demolition waste, furniture or mattresses. Stedman picks up bagged trash only. Hope Mills and Spring Lake both require building debris to be removed by the property owner within ten days of finishing the work. A roll-off is for the pile that is bigger, heavier or sooner than any of that allows.

Five ways to get the size right

  1. Estimate the debris before you call. Count rooms, pickup loads or the square footage of flooring coming up.
  2. Allow for bulky items. Furniture and cabinets take up more room than they weigh — break them down to save space.
  3. Ask about weight, not just yardage. Concrete, dirt and shingles go by weight.
  4. Size up when in doubt. It beats a second rental.
  5. Call early. Call before noon and we can usually have a truck on your site within hours; same-day or next-day delivery runs throughout Fayetteville.

Describe the job on the phone — the materials, the scope and the timeline — and we recommend the size that fits. No upselling, just honest advice.

Frequently asked questions

What size dumpster do I need for a kitchen remodel?

A 20 yard is the usual call for a kitchen remodel. A single bathroom usually fits in a 10 or 15 yard; larger remodels and whole-home renovations can need a 30.

What size dumpster do I need for a roof?

Many roofing jobs use a 10 or 20 yard, depending on the roof size and the material. Shingles are heavy, so the weight limit usually decides it, not the volume. Clean shingles kept apart from other debris also cost less to dispose of at the county landfill.

What size for yard waste or a garage cleanout?

A 10 yard handles a weekend of yard work, and a 15 suits most garage cleanouts. For a typical home cleanout a 15 or 20 is common; a whole-house cleanout with furniture usually needs a 30.

Will a 20 yard fit in my driveway?

Usually. It is about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide, so plan on that length plus clear room for the truck to back in. We found no City of Fayetteville permit for a roll-off on your own driveway.
