The 40 yard container in Fayetteville

The 40 yard is a job-site container, and the largest size we offer. Eight-foot sides mean it is loaded by machine or by a crew throwing from height, and it usually wants a lot or a job site rather than a house driveway. Commercial and industrial construction, full-building renovations and demolitions, large office and retail cleanouts, apartment complex renovations, roofing on large structures, disaster recovery — that is where it lives. It holds about twelve pickup loads, and the tall sides cut down the number of swap-outs on a big job.

It is light, bulky debris that justifies the 40: packaging, pallets, framing, fixtures, furniture from a whole building. Concrete, brick and metal go in within the weight limit, but they fill the allowance long before the box looks full, so for heavy rubble we usually suggest a 10 yard or a split-load plan alongside it.

Construction, demolition and big commercial jobs

General contractors on multi-phase projects, developers on new builds and demolitions, property managers renovating multi-unit buildings, businesses clearing a facility — those are the regular 40 yard customers. Demolition in North Carolina comes with paperwork: for commercial buildings and apartment buildings of more than four units, the state Health Hazards Control Unit wants a demolition notice at least 10 working days before work starts, even if no asbestos was found, and asbestos removal over the state thresholds needs its own permit. Asbestos never goes in a roll-off — Cumberland County's Ann Street Landfill takes it by appointment only, with a shipment record and a $100-per-load handling fee. We will ask what the building is before we quote.

Every load has to end up somewhere legal. Most Fayetteville loads go to the Cumberland County Ann Street Landfill at 698 Ann St, the county's permitted landfill for household trash and construction and demolition debris, at $46 a ton for each. North Carolina's construction and demolition landfill rules refuse liquids, hazardous waste, household garbage, appliances and yard trash, and drums, tanks and cans unless they are empty and punctured. Loads going in must be tarped or covered.

Access and placement for a 40 yard

The truck needs a clear run in — more room if it has to turn — a flat, stable surface and clear space overhead. On a job site we place it where the crews can work around it. A 40 in a public street needs permission first: a City of Fayetteville street or sidewalk needs the City's Temporary Right-of-Way Encroachment permit ($75 per 30 days on the FY2025-26 fee schedule — check the current fee); a state-maintained road needs NCDOT's written permit (G.S. 136-93); Raeford's code bans obstructions in its streets and sidewalks outright (Sec. 16-1); and Hope Mills' code keeps obstructions out of its streets (Sec. 86-4). Each town page says what that town's code asks for.

Suitability

Is the 40 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 40 yard for

  • Commercial and industrial construction
  • Full-building renovations and demolitions
  • Large office, retail and warehouse cleanouts
  • Apartment and condo renovations with a crew
  • Storm cleanup and long projects on a swap schedule

Pick a different size for

  • Residential driveways (it rarely fits and you will pay for unused space)
  • Heavy-only loads — concrete, brick and dirt go in smaller boxes
  • Jobs without machine or crew loading
  • Asbestos, hazardous waste, tires, batteries and electronics

Placing a 40 yard container on a Fayetteville-area property

It needs a flat, stable spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide on a lot or job site, a clear run for the truck (more room if it has to turn), and clear space overhead. On your own driveway or lot in Fayetteville we found no City permit for a roll-off; on a City street or sidewalk you need the City's Temporary Right-of-Way Encroachment permit — $75 per 30 days on the FY2025-26 fee schedule, so check the current fee — and on a state-maintained road, NCDOT's written permit (G.S. 136-93). Other towns have their own rules — Raeford bans obstructions in its streets and sidewalks, and Hope Mills' code keeps them out of its streets. Check your HOA too: covenants can cover containers in driveways. Boards go under the dumpster on request. Each town page covers its own code.

40 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

Will a 40 yard dumpster fit on a residential property?

Rarely. It needs a lot, a long drive or a job site. For houses, a 30, or a 20 with swaps, usually works better.

How do you load a 40 yard?

By machine or by crew. The sides are eight feet high, so hand loading from the ground is slow — plan for a skid steer or a ramp.

Can I put concrete in a 40 yard?

Within the weight limit, yes — but not as the main load. Five to six tons (about 10,000 to 12,000 pounds) is included and concrete hits that at a fraction of the volume. Put rubble in a 10 yard loaded level alongside the 40, or ask us for a split-load plan.

Do you offer long-term rates?

Yes. Long-term and multi-bin customers get special pricing, swap-out service and monthly invoicing — tell us the expected duration and we will quote the whole job.

40 yard dumpsters delivered across Cumberland County and the Sandhills

We run roll-off containers out of the Cool Spring Street yard to every town below. Fayetteville and the closest towns are often same-day; the edges of the area are more often next-day. Several counties license or permit the haulers that work there, and some towns keep containers out of the street — each page says so plainly. If your town is not listed, call anyway.
